Walkabout Lodge

The Walkabout Lodge and Tavern is conveniently located in the centre of Nhulunbuy with exceptional beach frontage, where the Gulf of Carpentaria meets the Arafura Sea.

There are 40 guest rooms, all of which are air conditioned and are equipped with cable TV, a fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and have their own private bathroom and outdoor patio area.

The Lodge features a fully licensed restaurant with poolside dining, a cocktail bar with a large LCD screen to enjoy seasonal sporting matches and entertainment. There are function facilities available with catering options for weddings, small to medium conferences and seminars.

Nhulunbuy and its surrounding areas are Indigenous-owned private land, with the township, mine, refinery and other areas covered by special lease. Permits are required to visit recreational areas and alcohol permit system exist. An alcohol permit system regulates purchase of takeaway alcohol in the region; permits can be obtained from the Dept. of Justice in the town centre.

Even though the town’s population is approximately 3800, Nhulunbuy has all the facilities expected in a modern town with three schools, a hospital, and two shopping centres with a wide variety of shops, library, bank and EFTPOS services, restaurants, health and dental clinics and ample sporting venues. There is also a fantastic surf club, yacht club, sport and social clubs and is host to an impressive nine-hole golf course.

Arnhem Land is the cultural home of the Digeridoo (the proper name is the Yidaki). The responsibility for this culture rests with one man. Djalu Gurruwiwi, a remarkable man and the master of both making and playing this ancient instrument.
